My First 100 Days As State’s Attorney
Since launching his campaign, Kranichfeld has traveled throughout Chittenden County, meeting with residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to hear their concerns and their vision for a criminal justice system that serves the whole community. Those conversations have reinforced a simple principle that has guided Kranichfeld’s career as a prosecutor: Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community.
"Public safety isn't just about prosecuting crime. It's about building trust, supporting victims, holding people accountable, and helping people succeed after they've taken responsibility for their actions," said Kranichfeld. "Today, I’m releasing the action steps I will immediately take as Chittenden County State’s Attorney to improve the criminal justice system for the whole community."
Kranichfeld’s first 100-day plan outlines the immediate steps he will take to strengthen public safety, improve accountability, and build a more responsive and inclusive justice system from day one for the people of Chittenden County.
Implementation of Kranichfeld’s ‘Safer Communities Initiative’:
The criminal justice system should serve the whole community — victims, families, people in recovery, neighborhoods, small businesses, and everyone who wants to feel safe in public spaces.
The Safer Communities Initiative is a prosecution strategy that combines accountability with transparency, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making to improve public safety for everyone in Chittenden County. Kranichfeld believes that when the system works, people do not just cycle through it, they move toward accountability, stability, treatment, recovery, and repair.
Under the Safer Communities Initiative, Kranichfeld’s office will:
Explain what the office is charging, what it is not charging, and why.
Track outcomes and use data to evaluate progress.
Build a stronger relationship with law enforcement while maintaining independence and accountability.
Collaborate with health, housing, recovery, victim advocacy, schools, municipalities, and community organizations.
Issue an Annual Report
The public deserves transparency and to be “in the know.” To improve communication with the public from the State’s Attorney’s Office, Kranichfeld will issue an annual report providing data and statistics, reflecting on the year in public safety, and communicating updates about his Safer Communities Initiative.
Convene a Countywide Meeting to Coordinate a Response to ICE
The Trump Administration and ICE have demonstrated that they want to divide our communities through fear and chaos. Kranichfeld will convene law enforcement leaders, community justice practitioners, municipal officials, and school leaders to establish a shared understanding of their respective roles and responsibilities regarding ICE activity in our communities.
Advocate for Legislation that promotes long-term solutions, including a Misdemeanor Court
We need a better long term approach to lower-level repeat crimes that plague our quality of life. For those cases, we need a system that is swift, effective, and efficient to get treatment to offenders and justice for victims. Kranichfeld will advocate for legislative change in the next legislative session to create a Misdemeanor Court, with dedicated resources to address these crimes in a timely way. This would create a pathway for lower level crimes to be addressed without allowing another backlog to build. Kranichfeld’s advocacy will be conducted in his usual collaborative style, working alongside public safety partners and the judiciary.
Hold a Criminal Record Sealing Clinic to Help Chittenden County Residents Get a Fresh Start
The criminal justice system at its best should be an escalator and not a revolving door, meaning it should lift people up and out of the system by giving them the tools they need to stop committing harm to the community. When this happens, people deserve a chance at a fresh start.
Kranichfeld’s office will hold a criminal record sealing clinic, helping eligible Chittenden County residents move forward when it is in the interest of justice. By removing unnecessary barriers to employment, housing, and opportunity, Kranichfeld believes that we can help more people fully participate in their communities and build better futures for themselves and their families.
